When you think of software companies, most likely you think of Microsoft, Adobe, maybe even Apple, because this is the software most users use on a daily basis for their personal lives. However, how many people have heard of Sirsi Dynix, 37 Signals, insidesales.com, or Remco Software. Each one of the four companies mentioned above may not be household names, but in their specific industry of libraries, business processes, sales, and hotels they are king.

If you have ever dreamed of starting a software business, your chances of success aren’t great if you plan on dethroning the huge company like Microsoft. You will better position yourself for success if you do what these less recognizable companies did. They found that the only way to get your name recognized is by targeting a niche, exploiting it, and building a successful foundation on that niche.

Practically every business in every industry uses computers these days, so there is a big need for industry specific software. The hotel and hospitality industry is a great example. Hotel management software is being used to great advantage by the hotel industry to simplify their processes and raise levels of performance. There was a need to implement software that could perform hotel tasks like reservation management, housekeeping and room service coordination, and others. Remco saw this need and developed hotel management software that has been a great benefit to the hotel industry and is quickly making them a leader in hotel management software.

Success like this takes time, but Remco hasn’t stopped with just one version of software. They have kept advancing and have invested a lot of time with everyone from bed and breakfasts to hotels to large resorts to understand the software’s strong and weak points in order to make it better. As they’ve spent time learning about their client’s businesses, they have been able to gain valuable insights as to how to modify the software. Now it does a lot more than simply making reservations and bookings. It includes features to manage spa amenities, address customer requests, and manage other parts of the hotel’s business. Also, the user interface gets easier to use with every software variation, so that the possibility of mistakes is reduced and so the hotel will increase its competitive advantage over competitors.

All Software companies have come about by finding the niche, even the big one. If you keep your eyes open, you can find an opportunity and a large enough market for you to exploit and start building a successful software business.

Have we forgotten what those ancient Greeks taught us? “Know thyself,” they said. In this day and age when all we’d ever like to know is just a few computer or smart phone keystrokes away, it seems like we would know a little more about ourselves. LMS training and online courseware also makes acquiring knowledge simple. But how familiar are we with our own bodies?

Unless you’re a medical student or practitioner, you’re probably unfamiliar with at least half of the hundreds of activities that are taking place in your body as you read this article. Personally I know I’m one of those people.

Online medical courses include those in nursing, pharmacy, radiologic science, and food and nutrition. Medical students often use LMS training only to complement real-life experience, but individuals can also benefit from such courseware.

Within the medical field, online LMS training provides a great deal of functionality.

For example, LMS training can be deployed for medical management purposes on topics like cultural sensitivity. Increasingly, doctors and nurses are being called on to understand cross-cultural issues. Aetna is one company that provides such training using online courseware.

One example of a cross-cultural issue is that chronic illnesses, which are pricey to deal with, hit immigrant Spanish-speaking Americans especially hard. For many Latinos, health care in their home countries is state-run, making the expenses as well as dealing with hospitals especially difficult.

Added to this discrepancy is the language factor, which hinders doctor-patient communication.

Online training in cultural issues for medics may be part of the solution to this problem. Medical professionals can be provided training videos and basic Spanish training to cover specific medical topics.

As with any face-to-face or LMS training, incentives are key to greater participation. That’s why programs like Aetna’s cultural sensitivity course give course credit to students for their continuing education requirements.

Subject matter experts, educators, and managers can use LMS tools to design, customize, and deploy training. Robust LMS features may include video and audio, podcast-creation, and screen-recording; as well as text, SCORM Publisher, test, quiz, and assessment features. Both within and outside of the medical community, people are growing to understand themselves as well as each other using online resources.

A regular question I get from small and medium sized business owners is just how much they should be spending on search engine optimization. The reality is that your SEO efforts should be based on the number of sites you’re trying to improve rankings for as well as the number of keywords you are managing. Regardless of the number, SEO requires time and effort.

Whether you are focusing on SEO or pay-per-click marketing, you must make an investment in time, resources, and dollars to achieve you goal. Often times search engine optimization is compared to PPC. This is an unfair comparison because pay per click marketing has an immediate and direct cost. The costs associated with SEO are more indirect but just as expensive. Consider you time, effort, and work associated with any optimization effort.

The costs involved with search engine optimization come in when resources are needed to analyze your web site from an SEO perspective. You may also spend a great deal of time doing keyword research and analyzing your competitors. In each of these scenarios, you are either paying a professional to do the work for you or spending your valuable time managing these tasks. As a result, you are spending money. Even if you are managing a project by yourself, you are experiencing costs. What is your hourly rate? What is your time worth? These factors should be part of your cost calculation.

The expense of doing things on your own are real. A great way to determine actual costs is by dividing your current salary by two thousand labor hours or the equivalent of a full year of work. This gives you an hourly rate. If you are doing much of the heavy lifting for your search engine optimization efforts, this is essentially the price you’re paying. It may not feel like the same as paying someone an hourly fee but the impact is largely the same.

Now that you have completed a thorough review of your website, competitors, and so on, it’s time to start applying search engine optimization techniques. To do so requires labor. You need individuals who can help to implement on page optimization factors and build links to your website. Are you the one doing all the work? Will someone else be performing these tasks? Consider the costs associated with each and make a wise investment in yourself or a third party.

Think about using online search engine optimization tools and resources to help prioritize your tasks. This can help you make the most of your time and save you from hours of meaningless work. Tasks such as article submission and so on can be automated or semi-automated with the right tools. You can even outsource these seemingly repetitive tasks for little or no money. Consider what tasks can be performed at a lower cost and set up a plan to take advantage of more affordable resources.

The practice of SEO is not free. In fact, when you add up all of the time, resources, and money spent on SEO, you might be surprised at the dollars required. This is because the resources needed for an effective search engine optimization campaign can add up. Software, online tools, your time and the time of others committed to your search engine efforts can be significant. Consider all of your options before investing in SEO. Spend your money wisely and only pay for results.

FABTurbo Review

Forex traders all over the world have been rocked by an expert advisor called FAPTurbo. Traders from all over the world have bought this software and added it to their accounts intending for it to help them on their way to making great profits. So the program has a huge popularity rating, but does it live up to the hype?

Before we look a little closer at how the FAPTurbo works, we’ll begin with the price tag. At $149 this robot is one of the more competitively priced forex software programs on the market. The lower price often makes a lot of traders shy away from this robot for fear that it may not be as good.

Does the robot actually work? In a word…yes. It works. However, if you’re expecting to double your account every single month, then you’re probably going to be disappointed. However, for $149, if you could get a robot that would double your account in a year, wouldn’t you be ecstatic? I think this is a very reasonable accomplishment for FAPTurbo. In fact, you could probably realistically expect to double your account every 3 or 4 months if your settings are right and you have a good broker.

How does this forex robot make profits? FAPTurbo works best on a scalping level, although it does also have the capacity to act as a longer term trading strategy. With this scalping trading software, you’re able to trade and cross-trade four currency pairs. These are the EUR/GBP, EUR/CHF, GBP/CHF, AND USD/CAD.

Each of these pairs has definite advantages. Being some of the more predominant currency crosses, the profitability is often consistent. If you’re willing to follow the pricing indicators given by this robot, there should be no need to consider some of the other major currencies or even some of the riskier emerging currencies.

The FAPTurbo seems to be set to trade throughout the pre-Asian trading session when the trading volume is quiet. This gives the predominant currency pairings chosen a very tight range for scalping. The robot does tend to leave trades open a little longer than a regular scalper simply due to the quietness of the market.

If you’re expecting a perfect trading robot, you’re probably going to be disappointed. This robot will incur some losses just like every single robot out there. However, the great thing about this robot is that it can make them up pretty quickly. You’ll get quite a few trades with this robot. On average you’ll probably see one or two trades per pair that you trade every day. Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on your spread.

FAPTurbo is a good robot that does offer far more value for the price paid than many of its competitors. It is possible to make very healthy profits in a relatively short time if you remain patient and take some time to learn how to get the best use out of your robot.

Animated talking avatars, Virtual representatives and Web Characters are growing dramatically in popularity because they work! It’s no accident.

It so much easier to put over complex product and service information using the spoken word, a thirty second narration is infinitely more effective and memorable than 2 pages of text and images. it’s what the media industry calls “lean back marketing”, where the viewer or visitor just relaxes and absorbs the information. Not only does the visitor get a concise and exacting media narration but it helps your site stand out from the crowd, become more memorable.

Training and educational establishments have demonstrated and proven that compelling media content used within the delivery of information gives great results, information retention is dramatically improved and its easier for the participant to concentrate on the information being presented. When it comes down to choosing your ideal animated web character there are a number of areas you should consider.

Nice Avatar or Nasty Avatar: Many offerings look as though it has fallen out of the ugly tree, is the quality something you are comfortable being associated with your image. So it’s fair to say you’re talking virtual representative should be “attractive” to look at and have a compelling and convincing animation. Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Automated Lip-Syncing: Is the avatar lip-sync accurate? there is nothing worse than watching a virtual representative that resembles a badly dubbed movie, it is critical, our brains react in micro-seconds when faced with something that doesn’t look right! It seems bizarre but most animated talking character offerings have less than convincing lip-syncing to say the least. Simple tests include; Does the virtual representatives lips stop moving when silent? Does it shape the phonemes correctly or is it just a random selection of gibberish?

Virtual Character Ambient animation: Does the talking character have an ambient animation, is it subtle, or over-the-top, does it exhibit gimmicks like eyes following the mouse or strange head rotations, does it look as though it is chewing a wasp. Subtle animations are more convincing to the watcher, at the end of the day it is the content being delivered by the speaking avatar, and all animations should be kept to a minimum to avoid distraction.

Talking Web Character – Not a robot! The quality of the narration is a key element in any media production, people would generally prefer an obvious amateur talking that the dreaded text to speech (TTS). Sometime in life a little care and attention to quality cannot be addressed with technology, and TTS is a prime example, what may seem like a great technology leave a great deal to be desired when you are the listener not the creator. Synthesized voices are great if you are using a Robot talking web character, but a definite no no if you are not. You will be surprised how inexpensive it can be to get professional voice over’s done, and in this day of high speed connections, there is a myriad of resources on the web to get them done. Most of us don’t like the sound of our own voice, so use a friend, or just bite the bullet and give it a go, at least you have full control of the delivery.

Tailoring the Avatar: Tailoring the web characters environment should be restricted to clothing and backgrounds in the main, your want your visitors and users to build a rapport with your virtual representative, so changing its looks continually does not offer continuity to the visitor.

Talking Avatar Integration & Hosting: Try to avoid, 3rd party hosting you have no control over their hosting facility, if you rely on your web compare and your service suppliers servers go down you have lost your “voice”, you are better off loosing your complete website that a single part. Try to avoid, monthly retainers and Pay-for-view contracts, again you have little to no control of the number of visitors that will come to your site, If you are on a Pay-for-view contract and suddenly get a higher level of visitation the costs of maintaining an virtual web character could be very expensive. . Ideally you want a solution that gives you total control of the final composition in an industry standard format; Flash, Flash Video or conventional Video, you can integrate it within your own media or web solution with no hidden charges or service risks.

Add a touch of flexibility: Flexibility can offer multiple uses as you become more adventurous with your virtual representatives so consider the following; The ability to be creative and design your production off-line; Can you get your hands on the native output in an industry standard format such as Flash, Flash Video, AVI etc so you could integrate your work into other environments such as Powerpoint, Camtasia, youTube, eBay etc, is there a good selection of compelling characters, care there additional composition add-ons such as clothing and backgrounds available. Are there any other services that can assist you from the supplier such as Voice-Overs, integration and bespoke services. Every little helps. Education & Training the compelling way: Imagine a PowerPoint presentation, facts, figures, graphs and images and there delivering the presentation, embedded within the screen a virtual tutor, available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. CBT has a new face, virtual assistants and guides integrate seamlessly into presentation media. Many formal education and training environments from the junior and pre-school nursery to the marble corridors of the corporate giants have seen the power of compelling media delivery. Literature assignment can be delivered in context and even brain teasing science and math education can become more precise when you have the help of a virtual tutor that has the power of “voice”. Un-attended education across the web or operated locally makes virtual education delivery highly effective and manageable. We know that retention is improved, we know that “lean back” education can be effortlessly absorbed and we know that there is nothing more powerful when it comes to delivering complex ideas or facts than the spoken word. The flexibility is endless. Education creators can concentrate on the subject matter and choose the ideal Virtual Tutor to assist in the process. Virtual Teachers can be available in different forms. Technology at its best, with a face and a purpose.

Summary: Doing any job badly is not a good idea, many people grab hold of a new technology and throw it at their audience with little thought. Implementing a bad Animated Virtual Representative is detrimental and could reflect on your business, take your time in the creation and don’t settle for second best. Remove the risk.

Internet Browser: The New IE8

Internet Explorer 8 has taken on its closest rival Firefox 3 head on with its nifty features. It has better tab handling, a smarter search bar and address bar and many new tools. It has also got a nifty feature for anonymous surfing (often called Porn mode) and security tools. However, I can almost sense cynicism from those who abandoned IE for Firefox, Opera or Chrome.

Yes the older IE was clunkier and it inundated your computer with spyware and popups. I can remember the browser hijacks that happened! But the new IE8 is much better.

Tabbed Browsing The tabs are a huge improvement for people accustomed to the alternate browsers like Firefox and Opera. IE handles the tabs well, the new one opening right next to the one you are working on, and in the same color. The color coding saves a lot of time if you require referencing. You can also move a tab by simply dragging it.

You can re-open tabs by pressing Ctrl-Shift-T and see the recently closed tabs by right clicking any tab and pick the one you want reopened. Moreover if a tab crashes it does not affect the others.

Like Chrome and Firefox, it has an integrated search box that searches the Web, RSS feeds, Favorites and your browsing history.

New Features This internet browser has Accelerators and Web Slices. Accelerators display feeds from other websites as a popup on your page or in another tab. All you need to do is highlight that link.

Security Finally makers of this internet browser have heard the cries of people who were suffering. Microsoft has installed something it calls SmartScreen Filter that has anti phishing capabilities and issues malware warnings. It blocks cross scripting attacks and protects against malicious ActiveX. Microsoft has claimed that it IE8 offers protection against clickjacking. Clickjacking is when hackers put an invisible code under a legitimate one. Once you click it, spyware gets installed.

Of course what has got people talking is the InPrivate browsing or the porn mode. When you browse the net in this mode, no browsing history, cookies or passwords are stored by the browser.

You can select the cookies you want deleted. This is innovative and convenient. You have an option where you can select to preserve the favorite websites data, so that when you delete your browsing history, certain data is preserved.

Search Bar It actually previews the website. When the IE8 gives you the initial results of your search, if the provider has any special graphics added, it shows up as a thumbnail which makes the search easy.

As far as internet browsers go, IE8 is smoother and faster than the IE7. However, it is just at par with Firefox. For simple browsing IE8 is a great option, it has better tab systems and a great search box and niftier features that Firefox doesn’t have, the accelerator, malware protection and of course the porn mode.

However, what it does not have is the add ons that Firefox users are accustomed to. However for basic browsing, this internet browser is far better.

The eReaders are here to stay. The leading manufacturers producing even more advanced models and the popularity of the concept is on the rise.

Amazon Kindle 2 has is currently dominating the market, but many other manufacturers are very close behind. The Sony PRS series is the closest runner-up. This reality in mind, many have sent me emails asking which model they should get.

The devices are doing their thing well enough, and I have heard good things about both of the choices. However, there are differences that would influence you decision.

The Kindle is a natural choice for many potential users. With its wireless connectivity and the huge arsenal of books, newspapers, magazines and blogs, the choice has already been made in the minds of many.

But, one should keep in mind the lack of native PDF support in the Amazon Kindle. With the conversion in between, many academic and business users should think twice before making this purchase.

While most of the academic work available in PDF format, the not so perfect conversion of the Kindle makes the lives of students even tougher than it already is. The documents are displayed awkwardly and sometimes they are completely unreadable. The same goes for the business professionals.

On the other hand, Sony PRS series eReaders, offer native PDF support, making it the default for students and business oriented audience. Although users have sent in reports of steeper learning curves and USB connectivity limitation, making the experience different than with the Kindle.

But, that’s where things line up. Students and business users would have a computer and an internet connection available to them anyway, due to their lifestyle.

So, to summarize:

If you are a heavy news and magazines consumer and like the much easier buying experience the Kindle offers, you should get it. You will enjoy the seconds it takes to deliver the content to your device.

However, if you know that you will consume mainly PDF files, the Sony eReaders is the choice for you. The native PDF functionality is worth it.

We all know the ipod to be the most popular portable media device in the world. First seen in 2001 the original model had 5 gig of memory and was only compatible with mp3 files but at the time, 5 gig of memory was the most anyone had every seen in an mp3 player so it was a monumental success.

There have been five re-releases of the classic version and it is therefore now in its sixth generation. When you read the specifications of the newest model you can see how far the ipod has come since its original release.

This sixth generation ipod comes with either 80 or 160 gigabytes of memory and supports pretty much any file format. It can play back images, games and videos and due to the vast amount of memory available, it can also be used as a portable hard drive to store anything on.

Of course, there were other models that took different shapes to the classic shape. There was the ipod mini which was only in production for a few years as the release of the ipod nano rendered it somewhat superfluous. The ipod mini was however the first ipod to have a coloured exterior (other than black or white), and was also cheaper than the classic.

Then there was the ipod shuffle, which was essentially a cheap version without the screen. The shuffle is a much simpler version and only plays songs. The lack of a display screen means that they are far cheaper to manufacture and therefore far cheaper to buy.

The most recent addition the ipod family is the ipod touch. This version has a full length touch screen and looks fairly similar to the iphone. It has huge storage capabilities and some have even said (slightly falsely, although I can see where theyre coming from) that the only difference between the ipod touch and the iphone is that you cant make phone calls on the ipod touch.

All the new models and updates have seen the ipod grow to be the most popular portable media device available today, over 173 million have been sold world wide and that number only looks like it will continue rising as ipods adapt to changes in consumer needs.
