The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe: This is a witty re-creation of Lily Tomlin’s 1985 one female Broadway show. Her characterizations run the gamut from box woman to juvenile delinquent to New Age Lady, with much of the material in a feminist vein. The show stars Lily Tomlin obviously. (120 minutes, 1991)
The Great McGinty: Sturges’ directorial debut (and Oscar winning screenplay) isn’t up to his later comedy classics, however Donlevy is phenomenal as the bum who is put into the governor’s chair by crooked partisans and then blows it all while he tries to be truthful. Cast includes Brian Donlevy, Muriel Angelus, Akim Tamiroff, Allyn Joslyn, and Louis Jean Heydt. (81 minutes, 1940)
House of the Dead: This is a low-grade terror film, based on the video game, which charts the predictable destinies of some addle brained youngsters drawn to an island inhabited by zombies. Sloppily made and mindnumbingly inept. Cast includes Jonathan Cherry, Tyron Leitso, Clint Howard, Ona Grauer, Ellie Cornell, Can Sanderson, and Enuka Okuma. (92 minutes, 2003)
Seminole: Adept cast in uncommon drama in reference to sincere cavalry lieutenant Hudson trying to help Indian tribe’s attempts to prevail free of white man’s law. Cast includes Rock Hudson, Barbara Hale, Anthony Quinn, Richard Carlson, Hugh O’Brian, Russell Johnson, Lee Marvin, and James Best. (87 minutes, 1953)
The Front: Bull’s eye comedy with heavy topic. Allen is a ‘front’ registered by blacklisted authors to set his name on their scripts throughout 1950s communist witch hunt, leading to assorted problems. Double Wedding: Loy’s orchestration of her sis’s marriage ceremony is upset by the presence of free spirited bohemian Powell. The megastars are the entire show in this alternatively disheartening adaptation of Ferenc Molnar’s play Incredible Love. Cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, Florence Rice, John Beal, Jessie Ralph, Edgar Kennedy, Sidney Toler, and Mary Gordon. (87 minutes, 1937)
Lillian Russell: This is a strained bio of the early 2Oth-century megastar. Lavish surroundings and weak plot line decrease Faye’s work. Arnold replicates his Diamond Jim Brady role with zest. Cast includes Alice Faye, Don Ameche, Henry Fonda, Edward Arnold, Warren William, Leo Carrillo, and Nigel Bruce. (127 minutes, 1940)
