Scada has been in extensive use for a lot of time now. Its full form is Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. It is being used to control and analyze all types of industrial systems. MMI or man machine interfaces are the widely used scada systems worldwide.
SCADA programs are run on computers and are used to control various devices from there. Many techniques are used to link to the devices that have to be controlled. These include Ethernet, modems and radio links. Sensors are used to access data about various devices in a plant or industrial location.
In some cases there are instruments that have different types of data communication interfaces. In such cases, we can use converters for conversion of signals. All the information from various systems can then be viewed on the central location.
All the information is stored in the central database. It is where all parameters of various equipments are continuously tracked and controlled. These can be modified if a read / write permission is provided to them. All the equipments located near or far, will have them monitored this way.
There are two types of parameters used. These are analogue or digital. The SCADA software fetches them continuously and stores them. The program can then makes its calculations based on all those stored parameters.
The calculations made by SACA program can then help in supervisory control and data acquisition. Modern Scada software shows you a graphical representation of various objects on the computer screen.
Some of the parameters received from various equipments are temperature, pressure and liquid level. The scada software can show the measurements and parameters in terms of graphical objects on the computer screen.
The scada pc software can also have additional modules that will automatically SMS or email a person during any problem or a pre-programmed situation. Thus these can help control a plant and access information about it remotely.
