The display is relatively responsive; you can use your finger or the included stylus. However, it’s a little confusing in that some items respond to a single tap, while some require double taps. There were times where we’d be waiting for a few seconds for an application to launch only to realize that we had to tap it again, so it’d be nice to have a more unified system. Items opened quickly when we selected them and we didn’t have to press too hard on the display. Scrolling through long lists takes some acclimation–you have to use a narrow scroll bar on the left side–but we got used to it. But like most other touch-screen phones, scrolling is not quite as fluid as on the iPhone. You can adjust the calibration and have a host of choices for the handwriting option. The display has vibration feedback, but the intensity is not customizable.

At this point, Nokia 5800 may as well be more of a trespasser than a worthy rival. When I first looked at this phone, I thought it was the Glofiish X500 with a couple of changes to the buttons under the screen. It is quite a sleek, if not slightly heavy, device with a rather large screen. The Acer shell is visually pleasing and user friendly. The shell works with two modes, either that mimicking your office desk, with calendar, memo, phone, CD player, etc on a desk with the ability to scroll left and right a frame for more of the desk, or if you scroll the screen down, an interface not dissimilar to that of the iPhone appears. It does come with the option to unload the shell if you want, but personally I quite like it. I thought the gravity sensor was slightly on the sluggish side but a nice addition to the unit.

The Sony Ericsson Aino is a touchscreen phone with a slide-out alphanumeric keypad. It has an excellent 8 megapixel camera, WiFi and GPS, and is the first phone to feature Remote Play support. This lets you control and access media content on your PS3 from your Aino using an HSDPA or Wi-Fi connection. It’s a powerful multimedia phone with a compact design and good looks. But it’s expensive and we’re not big fans of the keypad.

The Aino is clearly a phone that Sony Ericsson expects to do well. They’ve put a lot of trouble into the design of the phone, and even more effort into the advertising. So why give it such a stupid name? We have trouble saying the name of this phone without sniggering.

The Aino uses a combination of a conventional alphanumeric keypad and a touchscreen. This is a good design form, but in this case the keypad does let it down somewhat. But the touchscreen is good. It’s a nice bright display with 16 million colours and a larger than average resolution of 432 x 240 pixels, due to its lengthened aspect ratio. At 3 inches across, this is a good size screen for a compact phone. The touchscreen user interface is limited in functionality, with some functionality available only through the keypad, but what it does, it does well.

What is bizarre is that while the Aino has a touchscreen, it only works in media mode, meaning we wouldn’t have known it was there unless we were told. It’s easy to imaging a number of people poking their phone normally to no avail and then being perplexed when the touchscreen fires up in media mode.
