E-book readers have been around for a decade now. The Franklin Ebookman launched in’99 – and it’s still selling today. However, it’s only in the last six months or so that these devices have really come into mainstream public awareness. Without a doubt, the Amazon Kindle reader family are the frontrunners right now. When you think about it, e-book readers, and the e-books that are read on them, are the ideal product for Amazon. So it’s no wonder that they released not one but two new readers in the first 6 months of 2009.
The first to launch, in February 2009, was the Kindle 2. The large format Kindle DX – with its 9.7″ display – followed in June. If you haven’t taken any notice of these devices thus far, or if you’ve been wondering if an e-book reader is a sensible choice for you, then here are ten reasons why you might want to consider putting one of these devices on your Christmas wish list?
1. You’ll never be without a book to read again. It takes just sixty seconds to download a book from the Amazon website.
2. E-books don’t use ink, paper or bindings – and there’s no distribution. That means that your e-book is better for the environment than the equivalent traditional printed volume.
3. No need to worry about “getting connected”. Amazon use a fee free 3G wireless technology to download Kindle books.
4. Take a mini-library of books with you wherever you go. The Kindle 2 has room enough in its memory for over 1500 books. The DX can hold 3,500 books in its memory. You’ll never be without a book to read again.
5. Customise to your heart’s content. Customised covers are just one of a wide range of Kindle accessories on offer. Choose from covers, lights, stands, carry bags – whatever you like.
6.There are over 300,000 books at the Amazon website for you to choose from – and that number is increasing every single day. There’s bound to be something that you’ll like.
7. Listen to a little light music while you read. The Kindle stores and plays mp3 files.
8. Save money. Since there are no printing or distribution costs, e-books are quite a bit cheaper than the standard printed books.
9. Save money (again). You can find plenty of free books for the Kindle direct on the Amazon website. Many of these are classics – The Last of The Mohicans, Sherlock Holmes etc. – but you will also find special promotions of modern books.
10. The first chapter of most Kindle books is available as a free download. So you can try before you buy and see if you like a book before you part with your cash.
Check out the Kindle soon – it’s the future of reading.
