The Theory of Evolution was Darwin’s attempt to explain the development of species. The idea of natural selection, that the strong survive and the weak die off, has been integrated into the modern understanding of biology, but the organic world is not the only place where this survival of the fittest takes place. Quite the contrary: natural selection dominates the online business realm as well. However, while circumventing biology can be nearly impossible, utilizing the online marketplace to stay on top does not have to be as difficult.

The key is to understand how to survive. While companies around the world launch websites, only a select few make it to the big time. These company websites receive millions of hits and show up front and center on major search engines. In fact, being featured on the front page of a Google search results list is the best way to stay ahead of electronic natural selection. That task, however, is easier said than done.

Internet searches traditionally have displayed results through a ranking system. This system worked by examining the content of the page and rating its overall relevance to the search being performed. The search engine would then present the designated sites by their rank. There are certain drawbacks to such a straightforward approach, though, since this type of ranking only utilizes standard websites. In order to create a more comprehensive search experience, Google drastically revamped its searching capabilities in 2007 with the concept of Universal Search.

When opening up searches, Universal Search includes blended results listed by comparative ranking. Comparative ranking works similarly to traditional ranking, by analyzing the content and determining its relevancy to the search being performed. However, comparative ranking takes the process a step further, weighing websites alongside other online mediums, such as photos, videos, blogs, press releases and more. This goes hand in hand with blending, which provides search results for the full gamut of online mediums cohesively on a single page.

Google’s Universal Search, In this way, has changed the way online prowess must be achieved. Now, companies and website developers must utilize a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 2.0 approach, focusing not only on content with keyword rich copy, but also optimizing all of their digital media, thus showing they are the best “fit” with a strong, multimedia approach. By incorporating rich media like images and video, websites can increase their comparative ranking, being strong enough to overpower a greater variety of sources.

SEO marketers must diversify into a number of areas they may not have considered before.

* Blogs mentioning your website can now be used as marketing tools to drive traffic.
* Press releases are listed in the blended news results; used properly, this can be one of your most effective tools. News is ranked chronologically as well as by relevance; by keeping your website prominently featured through regular press releases, you can optimize your search engine results.
* Images are more important than ever before, and tagging them correctly ensures your site gets the proper recognition.
* Including your company website in local online directories gives you one more way to improve corporate visibility.

A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 2.0 approach is the only way to achieve internet dominance, ensuring online business survival at all costs.

The internet is a still evolving community, home to everything from exotic recipes to ridiculous videos to books that are no longer in print. In recent years, as the Web 2.0 revolution shifted the focus of the content online from providers to individual users, the amount and variety of data and entertainment available has exploded. Unfortunately, while the nature of the internet permits the mass publication of just about anything, it also means that a significant percentage of what’s available might not be considered appropriate for children (or in some cases, anyone).

Protecting children from the hazards of dangerous and inappropriate material online has been a tremendous challenge for parents and schools since the internet became a part of daily life for the majority of Americans. Some may feel in their frustration that the easiest solution is to simply keep kids off the internet entirely, but research has shown that keeping kids offline can slow their development in the information age.

The internet is a priceless tool for the near instant transfer of information, and being able to navigate it effectively is an indispensable skill in the modern world. Students can benefit greatly from the educational material online as well, so it’s understood that some sort of compromise must be made to allow children some access to the internet. Web filters are the most common programs that families and schools employ to try to allow children online without giving them access to everything on the web.

The balance that any web filter must strike between permitting some but not all content in is a difficult one, and some services are criticized for either blocking legitimate content or allowing objectionable content through. Some even suffer from both of these problems simultaneously. Even worse, some filters can easily be subverted by inquisitive teens with little to no technical skill.

Google, being the single most popular and well known search engine on the planet, is stop #1 for most users and especially most younger ones. There’s lots of safe content out there for children to access, and Google has always offered its own filter for search results, which has been very successful. Unfortunately these settings could easily be altered by any user, including the ones who shouldn’t not be getting unfiltered results in the first place.

Now, Google has launched a new improvement that allows a user to lock the SafeSearch option with a password to stop minors from altering the settings. The results generated by Google’s search engine while these SafeSearch settings are in place will also be visibly different from the normal search results, with a large image of colored balls in the upper right corner letting parents and teachers know even from across the room that the filter is still working.

There’s more than one way to keep children safe online, and the best option is to combine several layers of protection. Google’s new SafeSearch is a valuable tool to help keep objectionable material away from children, but it’s no substitute for active involvement with children while they are using the internet and educating them about the dangers that lie in the unsavory parts of the web.

To succeed in the game of search engine optimization you must focus on effective keyword research. By choosing the right keywords you can achieve search engine dominance. I have personally worked with hundreds of clients seeking number one rankings but who have given little if any focus on keyword research. This is incredibly important when your site is competing against well ranked sites that have been in the top ranking for some time.

In addition to focusing on a keyword phrase that doesn’t have strong competition, you need to find search phrases that are frequently searched on. I recently finished a consulting assignment for a company trying to optimize their website. They had good rankings for a keyword term that seemed to be somewhat desirable. However, keyword research proved that the term received less than one hundred per month. As a result of seeing so little traffic, top rankings for this keyword phrase were nearly meaningless.

Once you have found a keyword phrase that isn’t too competitive and receives an adequate number of monthly searches, the next step is to take a look at your competition. Google the keyword phrases you want to optimize for a run a back link check on the top three ranked web sites. This will show you the strength of those web sites relative to their search engine ranking. The more inbound links, the more difficult it will be to rank higher than they do without some type of sustained link building campaign.

Once you’ve conducted your keyword research and decided which keyword phrase you are going to optimize for, it’s time to focus on optimizing your web pages. This can be done by focusing on on-page optimization techniques and off-page optimization techniques. Start with a well formatted web site that includes keyword phrases in meta tags, page titles, and so on. Then turn your attention to off page optimization which includes link building and getting your site listed in major directories and social media profiles. Add additional link building techniques like bookmarking to enhance the quality of your web pages and web sites.

Your optimization strategy should include a plan for the continuous creation of inbound links. Build links too slowly and you’ll never get the authority needed to achieve the number one ranking. Build links too quickly and search engines may think you’re up to no good. If you want to improve your organic search engine results, begin with keyword research before link building. Having the right keywords can make the difference in your overall optimization results. Update your meta tags and web pages to integrate your keyword phrase, focus on link building over the long term, and you’re sure to achieve search engine dominance.

The SEO Advantage

Several times a website owner will just look at the Search Engine Results for keywords they have chosen when it comes to the presentation they are getting for their investment into SEO.

Focusing only on a certain keyword or phrase is all right, nevertheless it does not take into account what other remaining effects you might be receiving.

A site is being transformed into a planned navigation pattern of SEO when it is properly optimized. This is the same prototype that Search Engine Spider is looking for. Something that should not be overlooked, the easier an SEO makes it for a spider to index your site, the better your chances are for getting your site a higher placement in the Search Engine Results Placement (SERPs) for more than just targeted key words or phrases.

While W3C validation is rather what all sites should try hard for, it is not mandatory for improved rankings in all categories but as contest heats up, the further steps done now the smaller amount you will have to do later. Does it help now? With Google using over 200 separate elements for their algorithm, probably. Yahoo engineers have stated that whether a site is W3C compliant or not makes no difference to how it ranks. If it has relevant content, it will get ranked. But there is a big difference between being ranked and top ranking.

Another part of SEO is using correct text for of page titles, file names and placement of content make the site all the more appropriate to the spider. But having numerous occurrences of your target phrases and you will lose ground. Although Google places fewer values on Meta Tags, they are still a part of the algorithm, and so, should not be overlooked.

After the site has been coded properly, the program goes up to the next level. Search Engine Marketing is used to drive traffic to the site through various off site means. This off site promotion SEO effort is even more involved. Think of it like a small community. Getting business depends not only on who you are but who you know. How your website is tied to others in the community of the World Wide Web is important to search ranking too.

The collateral benefits of SEO begin to appear when the offsite program drives traffic to the website from all directions other than the Search engine. Giving a lot of information in the new areas that would generate interest in your products and services and pointing it back on your site is a very good idea. Finding relevant websites that could add up your visitors experience or that present news that is related in your industry help Search Engines determine how good you are to contend with others.

An even greater demonstration of a collateral benefit is ranking for keywords and phrases that you are not even targeting. Information put out about your products for example, if your site talks about the different uses of the products, the available colors that they come in and the best way to preserve them, you’ve just created a multitude of various phrases that your site can get ranked on. When your entire website is visible to the Search Engine it begins to determine other areas that you have relevance besides just what you have chosen. These other searches that bring you traffic are all bonus to the targeted work.

This is only a tiny sample of the potential your site has. Remember, each page gets ranked on it’s own, so that’s why it is so important to make sure every page you have on your site is optimized.

Even your contact/about page is vital because if you have a brick-and-mortar business, by listing your street address, you help the search engines geographically aim your site. Most search engines are already trying to centre your search marks regionally. While it’s not a major issue yet, it is something to be alert of.

Now therefore, it is always the best way to check your site in Google about the rankings of your keywords or phrases. Do not also forget all the hidden keywords/phrases that is embedded in your site. The benefit then of good SEO proves when the forgotten terms will end up at the top of the pile.

You might be surprised at how many of those forgotten about terms end up at the top of the pile. That is the benefit of good Search Engine Optimization.

If you’re looking for short cuts to high search engine placements, you’ll be looking for a very long time. I recently worked with someone on search engine optimization and spent a good deal of time focusing on both on page optimization techniques and off page optimization. Due to a relatively simple web site, optimizing their pages was relatively easy. We soon focused on off page optimization and some techniques to quickly build links to their website.

Off page optimization is all about building your web site’s popularity. Google measures this by applying their algorithm and rewarding you with a Google Page Rank. Once your page has Google PR, it can easily be compared with other pages in the same genre. This is especially true with new sites or pages that have very little history associated with them.

The very first thing to do is to evaluate a web site for the criteria that would make it easy to spider. Search engines spider need to access quality content to better classify each page on the web. After applying navigation that allows users to easily find content and search engine spiders to categorize content properly, its time to identify effective link building strategies.

One particular link strategy is related to directory submissions. Essentially you find directories that are well established and relevant to the subject matter of your own web site. The site I was working with had about 300 directories that would be ideal for a site like has. As a result, and due to the urgency by which he wanted the work done, we chose an automated directory submission service.

Within 48 hours of the site being submitted, the web sites ranking for targeted keyword terms dropped by more than 62 percent. I couldn’t believe what a detrimental affect the automated submission service had on this particular web site. Could this be coincidence or is there proof of the damaging effects of automated submission?

The team was not working on any other form of link building and as a result, what happened seems to be directly related to the automatic submission service. The challenge with these types of services is that you really can’t tell what type of activity they are engaged in when submitting to directories. All that I know for sure is that our rankings dropped significantly after the submission date.

My recommendation to anyone building links to their web site of blog is to simply stay away from automated services that promise results. Google and other search engines appear to be catching on and know what you’ve used an automated service to do your link building. You can still submit to directories to build quality one-way links to your web site. However, I recommend that you do so manually.

While we don’t often think about – or care – how Google works, it is very very important for anyone who is using search engine optimization, or natural search marketing for their business to understand the basic principles that drive the Google search engine.

There are three main parts to Google: Googlebot, The Indexer, and the Query Processor. Each of these three parts is crucial to online businesses, believe it or not. Let’s take a deep look at each of these Google elements to see how they work.

Googlebot is the search engine spider that visits your website and spiders your pages. It isn’t an actual spider, of course.

It actually works more like a web browser by calling a server and requesting pages, and downloading them – just as you do when you open your browser, type in an URI, and then the web page loads.

Googlebot, however, is run by numerous computers and performs this task much faster than one user could on their home or work computer. Googlebot also doesn’t know that a website exists until a URL is put into their Add URL form, or until they find a link to that website on another web page.

When Googlebot visits a page, they take all the links from that page, put them in a queue for crawling, and just repeat this process over and over again. Once Googlebot has found a link, and downloaded the page, it hands that page off to the Indexer.

The Indexer stores the pages in Google’s Index Data base. The Index then sorts all of the pages in its database, alphabetically, by looking at all of the keywords on the pages. The Indexer does not pay any attention to what Google calls for stop words, such as is, on, or, why, how, etc. It only pays attention to more important keyword type words.

The Indexer, after Indexing pages, waits for the Google Query Processor to ask it for a list of documents. A keyword is given to the Query Processor, which in turn asks the Indexer for a list of sites that contain that keyword.

The Indexer then supplies the Query processor with a list of the documents, and the Query processor presents the documents to the user who requested the keyword.

As you see, each element is important to the others. It all starts with the Googlebot finding your webpage link on another page, or by you going to Google and using the Add form to list your website.
