As great as owning a LED HDTV sounds, it is not a purchase to make without a serious consideration of cost. An LED HDTV may cost the buyer $4000. However, serious TV gamers and film watchers will likely find that the capabilities of the LED HDTV to portray fast motion is well worth the money spent. Many claim that they never imagined the difference in picture until viewing the screen. Those concerned about the environment and energy consumption also believe that the 40% cut by the LED TV sets off the upfront cost.

When comparing the three competitors for top quality televisions, plasma TVs, LCD TVs, and LED TVs are the three to compare. Plasma TVs are known for their incredible viewing angle. The once popular flat screen LCD monitor has been outdone when it comes to color accuracy and precision. The LED monitors are created without metal that is found in other bulb type monitors. NEC is one of the first to put the LED monitor on the market with a cost reaching up to $6000 or more to purchase.

It appears that LED has made its presence known in the world of electronics and does not intend to leave anytime soon. However, over time consumers should see reduction capabilities in the size of LED screens along with a reduction in cost.

LED Monitors Offer Longer Life

By now, almost everyone has made the switch to LCD monitors. While these monitors are much less bulky than the older CRT monitors, there are some disadvantages that can be solved by making another switch to the LED monitors.

The difference between an LCD monitor and an LED monitor is with the source of the back light. The older LCD monitors are back lit with florescent tubes. These tubes only have a lifetime of three to four years before they begin to dim. Although it may seem that the smart thing to do to correct this problem would have been to allow the consumer to change the florescent tubes and keep the same monitor, but this option has not been offered by manufacturers. Instead, users are left with no alternative other than to replace their monitors. Thus, monitors become a large source of electronic waste.

In addition, although lighter than the monitors they replaced, LCD monitors are still heavier and thicker than LED monitors. Part of the thickness is due to the size of the florescent tubes. In contrast, LED monitors are very thin, especially if they are the edge lit type of monitor. It is the introduction of these monitors that make the ultra thin notebooks of today possible.

A third disadvantage of the LCD monitors is that the florescent light does not produce a full color spectrum. There are some colors that are just not as bright with these monitors as they are with the LED monitors that produce a high quality white light.

In addition, you will save energy with these newer monitors. While the amount may seem insignificant for a desk top computer, for a notebook or laptop computer less energy consumption means longer battery life.

Some users do complain that the edge lit LED monitors do not have an evenly lit screen. They find it brighter along the edges and darker in the center. This is due to the fact that the LED lights are only along the edges, making the super thin screen possible. This may simply be a matter of adjusting to the use of the screen.

Other users find the screens too bright for their preference. One solution is to buy a monitor with a brightness control that will allow you to dim the screen if it causes problems for you. This can help you to avoid eyestrain.

Over the last eighteen to twenty four months, anyone looking at buying a new television would have most likely come across chat about OLED televisions. The latest advancement in TV technology, it has been spoken about with the industry for quite some time before this. That is to say that the black produced through the screen is as close to that seen in nature than anything that has gone before it. This means that all other colors have greater clarity and realism too.

The advantages do not stop there however. Because of the use of these organic compound layers that create light, OLED televisions screen can be immensely thin. They can be so thin in fact, that the screen itself can be bent and manipulated in almost an infinite number of ways.

The screens are also virtually indestructible, so could easily be turned to other uses such as; billboards that curve round corners or clam shell cell phones that are entirely made up of a touch-screen. This is for the future though; presently the major benefit is in TV screens that are up three millimetres in thickness!

It is in the lack of screen size where OLED televisions are yet to make a huge impression though; with the biggest being limited to just fifteen inches on the diagonal. Whilst this is small in comparison to existing LED and LCD screens, the resolution is not diminished and the picture quality is the best you can get. Being so svelte too; they are beautiful things to behold.

Other than screen size, the obvious downside when looking for OLED televisions is the price. You can expect to pay a minimum of two thousand five hundred dollars for a screen size of just eleven inches. For that amount you can get a good quality forty inch (and upwards) LCD screen, so this puts it beyond the reach of most.

They also have a relatively short life span. Conversely, the main competitor in the market, the LED television is very generous in its longevity. Availability at the moment is also not very high; though this in itself is indicative of the very latest technological releases.

These are facts though; not in any way criticisms. New technology always has problems to resolve. New technology also commands a higher price; not just to repay development costs, but also as somewhat of a status symbol of course. As the market settles, costs will come down, and the shortcomings resolved; humans are quite good at that!

In conclusion, OLED televisions are a very exciting development in the next generation of TV technology. The bandwagon just keeps on rolling on, the energy consumed is lower, but the quality of picture received greater, this all but cements the success of the products in years to come.
