Borderline – Peculiar thriller comedy in which Los Angeles policeman Trevor tries to collect proof contrary to cunning drug smuggler Burr when mixing with hard gentleman MacMurray in Mexico. Starts out promisingly, although eventually slows down in ridiculousness. Lantana – Stirring, adult storyline of relations obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Onionhead – A messy film with Griffith joining the Coast Guard in pre WW2 and becoming a ships chef. The movie attempts to be a comedy, a romance, and a drama at the same time and succeeds at none. The Prince and the Showgirl – Reasonably good but slow moving comedy of saucy American show gal Monroe being courted by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) throughout the 1911 coronation of George V. Filmed in England, with marvelous performances by Monroe and Olivier. Cast includes Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Jeremy Spencer, and Richard Wattis. (117 minutes, 1957)
The Defiant – A preoccupying account of 2 runaway convicts, one black and one white who are chained together as they escape from the penitentiary in the South. Excellent performances by Williams and Chaney as individuals they meet during the voyage. Academy Prize for screenplay by Harold Jacob Smith and Nathan E. Cast includes Tony Curtis, Sidney Poitier, Theodore Bike, Charles McGraw, Carnie Williams, and Lon Chaney, Jr. (97 minutes, 1958)
The Search – Touching drama of American cadet Clift regarding for concentration camp survivor Jandl in postwar Berlin, when the lad’s mother sadly looks all over the camps for him. Beautifully performed and directed. Cast includes Montgomery Clift, Ivan Jandl, Aline MacMahon, Jarmila Novotna, and Wendell Corey. (105 minutes, 1948)
