Amazon Kindle Faces Strong Competition

There are currently a large number of manufacturers fighting it out in the nascent, but rapidly expanding, e-book reader marketplace. The high level of competition is a good indication that rapid growth is expected in this area. And this strong competition will be good news for consumers as manufacturers fight amongst themselves to enhance specifications and reduce prices.

The list of major players who have e-book readers in various stages of development – and in some cases, ready for imminent release – is impressive. Plastic Logic, Barnes and Noble, Sony, Asus, iRex, – don’t forget Microsoft and Apple (as if) – are all lined up and jostling for their fair share of the market.

There can be little doubt about the market leader at the moment of course. The Kindle reader from Amazon has not only dominated the market, but has been driving and shaping its development since it hit the market in November 2007. Now into its second generation with the Kindle 2 and the large display Kindle DX, Amazon has a 60% share of the American e-book reader market. The Kindle reader is now their top selling product and, on October’ this year Amazon commenced shipping the international Kindle 2 to over 100 countries around the world. It’s a backhanded compliment to Amazon that almost every new e-book reader in development (and there’s no shortage of these, the list above is far from exhaustive) which shows any potential whatsoever, is instantly christened the “Kindle Killer”. Currently, the Kindle sets the benchmark which must be attained, and then bettered, in order to achieve success.

If it appears as if the Kindle’s present leadership position is unassailable, then it’s probably worth considering that Amazon were a somewhat late entrant to the market when the Kindle was released. The original e-book reader is generally considered to be the Franklin eBookMan which launched in’99 – ten years ago. The Sony PRS was also released before the Kindle’s launch in 2007.

The incredible success of the Kindle was due to a variety of different factors. Amazon had a very strong association with books, being among the largest web retailers. They also had a huge choice of books available to download – presently they have in over 300,000 titles on offer at the Kindle store. The option of wireless connectivity – with no fees – was another big plus.

Just as Amazon came from nowhere to secure the number one position, one of the other contenders could do exactly the same – and in the short term. For example, Barnes and Noble have more than one million titles available for download to their new Nook e-book reader. They will also use the ePub format – which the majority of readers in development seem to be favoring. Kindle’s format is proprietary. Purchase a Kindle book – read it on your Kindle.

The Nook will also allow you to “lend” books to your friends and family for a fourteen day period. During this time, the borrower will be able to read it and the lender will no longer have access to it on their Nook – just like lending a “real” book in fact. The only difference is that you will be guaranteed to get it back.

Sony’s new reader – the Sony Daily Edition – will also have a large display format and wireless connectivity – like the Kindle DX – but unlike the DX it will incorporate touch screen controls. It will also let users download e-books on loan from participating public libraries. Again – just like a conventional book.

Many of the other readers under development incorporate features that could well make them more appealing than the Kindle. It looks like Amazon have a fight on their hands – but it seems unlikely that they will give up their top dog position without a struggle. Considering their innovative role in the development of the market to date, and given the importance of the Kindle their business strategy, it seems logical to expect them to have a few new ideas yet to be revealed.

At the end of the day, given the level of activity amongst all of the various manufacturers, it looks as if the e-book reader market is about to start growing even faster. Hopefully the rampant competition that seems about to be unleashed will force prices downwards and take e-book readers out of the high tech domain and into mainstream personal mobile tech market.

Last week Amazon reported excellent third quarter figures. Net income was $ 199 million – 70% up compared to the third quarter of 2008. Both revenues and profits exceeded analyst’s predictions and a very strong fourth quarter is now on the cards. Share price rose by 27% amid strong expectation that Amazon would become the dominant online retail business in the post-recession economy.

The Amazon Kindle e-book reader has been a major element of Amazon’s success. Originally launched in 2007, and now in its second generation, the Kindle enjoys a 60% share of the US e-book market. Amazon has now, after a long wait, started shipping the Kindle 2 reader internationally to over 100 different countries. The Kindle DX is scheduled to start international shipping in early 2010.

This was followed, no more than two weeks later, by a third price cut and the consolidation to a single Kindle 2 reader – the Kindle International version, which now sells for $259. Many industry watchers saw this as a reaction to the announcement of the “Nook” e-book reader by Barnes and Noble. Whether this is true or not, the focus on the huge global market and consolidation on a single reader makes good sense.

Apple, Microsoft, Plastic Logic and Sony all have e-book readers either in development or ready for imminent launch. The e-book market is still nascent, and it is developing and growing rapidly. Amazon have, thus far at least, enjoyed a dominant position – and the Kindle reader is now their best selling product. It does not seem at all probable that they will be inactive whilst other manufacturers overtake them.

Of course, Amazon have other profit generators over and above the Kindle. Membership of Amazon Prime – which offers better delivery options for a one off yearly payment – also saw very strong growth. Growth was highest in international markets.

A company spokesman predicted that business analysts could expect Amazon to expand both the categories of goods on offer along with geographical expansion over time.

Sales in the range of $ 8.13 billion to $ 9.13 billion are forecast for the fourth quarter.
