Games are fun for all of us, but for some reason a majority of either grow grumpy as we get older, or we grow jealous at the lack of time to indulge ourselves. It seems that the number of so called experts condemning a game is inversely proportional to the success of the game. With that as the lead in argument, it is no surprise that the non players find it more than annoying when a friend begins to play Sonic games online, entering the Sega world of the hedgehog and disappear for extended periods of time.
With all the severe games which include weaponry and raw brutal violence it is hard to imagine anything as pedestrian as a hedgehog could do anything any harm. But just try to sit down and fire up the hedgehog and see what happens. If you are a child, you will suddenly find there are over 30 chores you have not completed, some of which you have never heard before. If you are an adult, suddenly this is exactly the time for a conversation or some other task that must be handled.
This is the 20th year since the game debuted. The creators at Sega were responding to their CEO who made it clear Sega needed some kind of mascot. The prime competition at the time was Mario of Super Mario fame, who was just lighting up the fan base. What came next was an internal contest at Sega to try and find the character that would be the face of Sega.
He decided to gamble on the creativity of his team of animators, and held a contest. The idea was to come up with a character that would have the appeal to players and the interesting story line to engage players. This new character would serve as the mascot of the Sega brand. Sonic was the winner, with the last competitor an armadillo.
One hurdle creative gaming programmers and creators must contend with is that the games are immensely popular and if a particular character and game is to survive, it needs to appeal to a world wide audience. The real challenge is that the worldwide audience is anything but homogeneous. A particular problem arose for Sonic as he headed to the United States for his North American debut.
This presented something of a problem for the marketing team handling North America, they knew it needed to be changed, but they were not making much headway convincing the Japanese team, so they flew to Japan. Eventually the Japanese team allowed that the American Marketers may know what is best, so they relented. It was one of their best decisions, as the American audience turned out to be one of the strongest.
The story line behind the game pits a hedgehog with the capability of moving faster than the speed of sound against an evil Doctor. The Doctor is kidnapping the animals and turning them into evil Robots with designs to take over the world. Only a spirited sprite like our speedster had the ability to thwart him and his evil plan.
The hedgehog has done very well competing with the plumber for Super Mario fame, and the have been competing head to head for more than a decade. The exception was the introduction to three dimensional gaming, an arena Nintendo was much better suited for than Sega. There is still hope however, because now that everyone can play sonic games online, the differences in the gaming platforms is narrowing once again.
