You will find the page title inside the <title?</title? tags usually within the first few lines of the HTML code. This is an example of an HTML title tag : <title?This is my page title</title?.

Search engines are very focused on page titles because it is like the title of a book – it tells you what is inside. By paying close attention to the page title you can move your ranking up considerably. The other day we could not get a client to rank for a specific keyword – we had overlooked adding this into the title (we are ranking clients for many keywords) and then the next day after we got the page reindexed by Google they moved from the second page to the first.

The trick is not to dilute your page title with additional non-keywords. Do not add words like in and the, and other filler words. The closer you can get to the pure keywords the better.

For example, avoid doing this: <title?Earth Worms in the Middle East</title? when your keyword is earth worms. Alternatively simply use: <title?Earth Worms</title?.

If you have multiple keywords only use 2 or three uttermost or again the focus is diluted. If you are using multiple keywords then do it like this: <title?Earth worms | Middle East</title? – never use filler words like ‘in’ and ‘the’.

One Stop Meta Tag Mania

There is only one meta tag that most search engines use – the description tag. It is not ordinarily used for SEO ranking purposes, but it is ordinarily used (including by Google) as the text on the search results listing.

The content of the description tag is used more often than not by Google when it displays the results pages for a keyword. It uses only the first 156 characters though so make sure if you are using it to check the length of the text. If you do not check the length your text will be truncated and it will look funny.

So when you use a good description and a search engine uses it then it will help your click through rate. If your description is attractive people will click though more.

The meta tags should appear in the head section of the page between the head tags.

Google is a little rascal when it comes to using or not using the meta description tag. When it does use it you can have full control of what is exposed to possible visitors but it will often vary what it uses at will with sometimes it just plucking a piece of text from your page.

If you want to control what Google displays then the very first 156 characters of text on a page should be highly controlled because if it does not use the description tag it will use this text.

If you have a flash site or just use images with a little text, you have a problem! We have seen Google pick up the alt text from an image and display this when it didn’t choose to use our description tag. This will tell you to ALWAYS have some text on your page even if it is only 156 carefully chosen characters (including spaces).

Moving a WordPress.com hosted site to your own WordPress site hosted by you is uncomplicated – do a database backup and then set up WordPress on your web site and then restore the contents. Moving a Blogger site to a WordPress site is not as easy. One fundamental thing to watch out for if you move a large blog to your site (with lots of content), that if you are currently ranking for a number of keywords, then your ranking can be seriously affected after you have added your blog content.
