Tanning Lamps

Tanning bed lamps are used in every sun bed or suntan lamp in the shops. When you are buying a new or especially a used suntan bed, make a good examination of the lamps. Ensure that they are proper tanning bulbs and meet the FDA guidelines with regard to health and safety. You should also consider how easy it is to get at the bulbs. Make sure that the bulbs are not difficult to change when needed. It is very important, and a lot cheaper, if you can perform such simple maintenance yourself, if you have a home tanning bed.

There are two completely different sorts of bulbs used in low pressure and high pressure beds. Ensure you get the right sun bed bulbs for your sun bed, because you cannot use any bulbs you like. If you are purchasing replacement bulbs on the Internet, check the make and model of your existing bed carefully. Ensure that the lamps you are ordering are made for your bed.

High Pressure Tanning Bulbs: high pressure beds have quartz-tube lamps in a multitude of sizes. The gases used in these lamps are pressurized to slightly higher than atmospheric pressure. The bulbs in these beds are located in the hood of the bed, so that you tan only from above. When you have tanned the skin on one side of your body for about 10-12 minutes, you turn over and tan the other side. The flat bed of these tanners is a great deal more comfortable than a regular tanning bed.

One of the biggest advantage of these HP bulbs is the amount of time you need to spend on the tanning bed. Because you tan more quickly, you need to spend less time in the tanning salon, which means it works out cheaper. You can achieve the depth of tan you require in about three weeks of three to five sessions each week. However, with a low pressure bed, it would take you at least a month to achieve the same level of colour. Maintaining your tan is a lot easier too. You only need two or three sessions a month to maintain the colour, as opposed to four times that many visits to a conventional salon bed. Many of these bulbs produce UVA rays only, not UVB rays which are responsible for sunburn.

Conventional Sun Bed Lamps: Conventional, or low pressure beds use long tube lamps that resemble normal fluorescent tubes. The lamps are located in the top and the bottom of the sun bed, which means that all the body areas are tanned at the same time, without needing to change positions during the tanning session.

Conventional beds use UVA and UVB rays in varying mixes. Some use both rays and others emit mostly UVA with some UVB rays. UVA rays are the cause of the (premature) ageing effects on the skin and UVB rays are the burning rays that produce skin burn when you are outside in the sun. It is very important to determine which kind of rays your sun bed’s bulbs emit. You must ensure you replace your existing bulbs with the same new lamps after about 1,000 hours of use.

Something else to think about when selecting the type of bed you use at home or in the salon, is the tanning bed lotion you will use. Different lotions suit different sorts of beds. The owner of your tanning salon will be able to help you select a lotion that will work for the bed you are using and your skin type. No matter what bed you use, you ought to definitely always use a lotion or a cream, because they will moisturise your skin and help you get a Hollywood tan more quickly.

The Three Ways to Treat Acne

Acne is horrible. However, it’s not something that cannot be tackled. There are heaps of acne skin care products around. We can pigeonhole acne skin care products into 3 broad categories -

A] Preventive or general acne skin care products; B] Over-the-counter, specialised acne skin care products; C] Prescription only acne skin care products.

The all-purpose acne skin care items are the ones that are used as an acne-prevention measure. These include cleansers, make-up removers and similar items that help prevent acne. In the real sense, these acne skin care items are those that should be part of your daily routine anyway. However, some of these are more orientated to work like a general acne skin care item.

These acne skin care items work against the reasons for acne e.g. limiting the production of sebum/oil and avoiding the clogging of skin pores. Basically, these acne skin care products prevent the oil from becoming blocked in pores and hence impede the escalation of the bacteria that lead to acne. Broad-spectrum acne skin care items also take in exfoliation products like skin peels. These work by removing dead skin cells, thereby reducing the likelihood of pore-clogging and bacteria increase.

Then there are specialised acne skin care products that are available OTC i.e. without the requirement of a prescription. These embrace products like vanishing creams which remove the extra oil from the skin. Most of these acne skin care products are based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the enemies of bacteria (and hence acne). You must start with a product that has a lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide (e.g. 5%) and see how your skin responds to it.

Alpha-hydroxy-acid based moisturizers are also common as acne skin care items. You may have to test a few, before you find the acne skin care product that is most effective for you. If nothing seems to work, you should contact a skincare specialist.

Prescription acne skin care items are the ones that are prescribed by a dermatologist. These include ointments that can be applied on the affected area or oral antibiotics or just any topical medication. A dermatologist may also suggest a minor surgical process to do away with the contents of pustules. However, never try to squeeze or do this by yourself, as it can lead to the permanent damage of your skin.

Your physician could also prescribe a hormone-based treatment (since hormonal changes are also known to cause acne). Such acne skin care items are known to be very efficacious in many circumstances. So, with all those acne skin care items, tackling acne is really not all that difficult.

Home Repairs Do-It-Yourself

It appears that there has been a wane in consumer trust in the building and construction industry of late. This may be because of the scams shown on television or the bribery and corruption endemic in the corporate sector, but it is almost certainly the same motivation why so many are now doing home improvements by themselves.

And why shouldn’t they? A little knowledge of the technical aspects together with with an eye for creativity is often enough to carry out the home improvement on your own.

Why are people turning to do-it-yourself home improvements?

There are many people trying to pass themselves off as construction workers, although they do not have a lot of experience in construction or home maintenance and they are literally are out there right now practising, learning their trades on homes like yours and mine across the country.

As a result, homeowners are finding that the jobs are not being finished to their satisfaction. Sometimes they are even pre-paying for services that do not get done or were not part of the plan.

You do not have to trust and pay someone to enhance your home. Why not have a go yourself?

You can augment your home?s existing concrete surfaces using acid stains, acrylic paints, epoxy paints, and scoring techniques.

If you are tired of looking at dull gray concrete, there are some easy projects if you are serious about having a go at home improvement DIY, you can easily give your patio, driveway or garage a refreshing new look.

Attractive concrete work costs about double that of standard concrete, which is why many people cannot afford it.

However, there are inexpensive methods to beautify concrete after it has cured, without having to pay skilled tradesmen.

Acid-based concrete stains are becoming more and more popular for coloring concrete surfaces. They chemically react with the cement to generate permanent color with a variegated or mottled appearance like that of marble. This results in a natural, stylish looking surface.

Water-based concrete stains are an alternative to acid stains but are much more user friendly because they are so much less dangerous. These stains do not chemically react with the concrete; they are absorbed into the porous surface and act like a colorant. The big benefit of water based stains is the wide choice of colors on hand.

If you want to venture beyond the basic staining of your concrete, think about using some scoring techniques to create patterns on the surface.

You can make your concrete resemble a tiled floor for instance. It is just up to your imagination. A mini angle grinder with a 4 inch grinding wheel is the ideal tool for this.

The key thing to remember when scoring is to trace out the pattern on the concrete first and ensure you are happy with the way it looks because scoring is irreversible.

Epoxy paints make an outstanding coating for garage floors and basement floors. Many commercial floors have epoxy coatings because of their durability and resilience to chemical spills as well as their appearance.

In recent years, however, it has become very fashionable for residential use with the availability of an growing number of different colors. This is not a complicated project, but the key to successful application is surface preparation.

Epoxy paints have also become available in a water based form making it safe for the DIY’er and perfect for indoor applications. They cost a little more than stains. For a 400 square foot area, you’ll pay out about $200 for the materials needed for this job.

So, you see? You do not have to spend big money to improve your home. You have the competence to do it yourself. With some instructions and a little bit of work, anyone can turn boring concrete into a work of genius of their own.

Electronic Bug Zapper

The electric insect killer is the best way of ridding the space around you of insects, especially the flying ones like mosquitoes. The indoor bug zapper vaporizes any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantaneously on contact with a pleasingly loud, electrical ‘crack’!

However, this does not mean to say that the hand held bug killer cannot be used outdoors, as long as it is not too wet. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the electric bug zapper dry and please do not use it while you are standing in the pool!

Models do vary a lot, but there are basically only two kinds of indoor insect zapper: the battery operated bug killer and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both are equally effective at zapping bugs and employ the same principle.

The indoor insect killer resembles a ‘junior’ tennis racquet, but with three layers of ‘strings’, which are in fact wires. The innermost grid of wires becomes live at the touch of a button, while the other two networks, one on either side, are harmless earths.

When an insect is trapped between the wires of the hand held insect killer, it creates a short, which vaporizes it instantaneously with a loud crack. The hand held bug killer will zap other insects too, but they tend to fry rather than explode.

I have been using the rechargeable type for about five years and am extremely satisfied with the electric bug killer. In fact, the electric insect killer has come a long way over the last few years. A fully charged indoor insect zapper is strong enough to last for a few hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, when unused, for weeks without any noticeable discharge.

The battery recharge unit will take intensive use for the best part of a year, although its ability to hold a charge for a few weeks gradually reduces after six or seven months.

The latest indoor bug killer I’ve used has a main on/off switch, an LED that comes on when it is live (the brightness of this light also gives an indication of the battery’s strength) and a light that comes on when it is plugged in for recharge.

The instructions suggest that it should be (re)charged for sixteen hours. I usually put it on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the electric bug zapper shows a marked increase in performance with only a couple of hours charging.

The latest version I’ve seen also comes with a powerful beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very useful when walking in the garden, but I’m not sure whether it’s meant to attract the flies in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re bored. You know, like an anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my indoor bug zapper for that too, but the headlamp uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the hand held insect zapper is a big asset to any outdoor event. The indoor insect killer is useful to ‘clean out’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unbeatable for evening mosquitoes and it will clear a lunch table of wasps as well.

Have you ever used an indoor bug zapper? If not, or if you are interested in getting an electronic insect killer, please click one of the hyperlinks to our web site or blog.

Treating Acne Scars

Acne scars are a sad memento of the having suffered pimples or even acne previously. They are intolerable because of their seeming permanence and their non-complimentary appearance. Generally speaking, acne scars are quite hard to treat, but tissue regeneration is not unusual these days with all the amazing technological developments.

In general terms, by acne scars, we are referring to the healed lesions caused by an acne infection. While most scars are temporary and disappear naturally in time, those from the more severe forms of acne can become permanent.

Acne scarring can be prevented if the patient visits a doctor when it is in the incipient stage, particularly if nodules or cysts accompany the red pustules on the skin’s surface. If the bouts of acne have marked your skin, you will have to approach the problem from a different perspective, which most of the time means surgery.

Laser resurfacing is one way of removing the damaged skin areas and stimulating the natural regrowth of the tissue beneath. The procedure requires only local anaesthesia and can take between a few minutes and an hour depending on the extent of the problem.

Fractional laser therapy is one of the most recent forms of removing acne scars. It means surgical intervention at deep skin layers. The treatment is better than both dermabrasion and laser resurfacing in terms of quality and has a much reduced healing period. Nevertheless, fractional laser therapy lies within the reach of only those few lucky sufferers, who can pay for it, since it is the most expensive acne treatment currently available.

It can be that other sessions are required to improve the condition of the superficial layers of skin, before they can start the deep level treatment of the acne scar. The doctor may inject collagen into the scarring in order to raise the normal skin level or she/he may recommend micro-dermabrasion for the same reason. Trying to perform chemical peels for acne treatment at home is a bad idea given the risk of aggravating the condition by irritating the scars even more.

As for the forms of acne scars, they can be classified by the way they look. Scars can result because of an increase of tissue or due to a loss of tissue They both have an adverse impact on the way the face looks. Specialists’ evaluation of the nature of the scars is a very important factor in deciding on the adoption of one kind of treatment or another.

Dealing with Dry Skin

Dry skin is very often sensitive too, which just makes it more difficult to deal with. Dry sensitive skin feels tight because of the lack of natural oils and has a tendency to develop small expression lines that will evolve into wrinkles. Moreover, this kind of skin makes one more exposed to allergic reactions, rashes, capillaries rupturing and sudden flushes. Therefore, the taking care of dry sensitive skin proves quite a challenge at times. It is worth mentioning the fact that it afflicts people regardless of age, colour or gender.

You have to follow rigorous steps in your choice of cleansing, moisturising and make-up products when you have dry sensitive skin to take care of. First of all, you need to reduce the amount of products you put on your skin. The fact is, the more chemicals you come into contact with, the bigger the chance of getting rashes. The products ought to be perfume-free and hypo-allergenic so that you don’t develop red, irritation blotches. Blusher and foundation can present some problems for dry sensitive skin.

Try not to use too much make-up in order to permit your skin to breathe properly. When you are shopping for make up, other than looking for the hypo-allergenic label, you should also try to ensure that they are oil-free. Furthermore, foundation and blusher should be water-based because they don’t clog your pores. Moreover, oil-absorbing foundations are not recommended for dry sensitive skin, because they will make your epidermis even drier.

It is also not recommended that you use exfoliants or astringent products on dry sensitive skin because they could irritate the thin epidermis. The same thing must be said in relation to cleansing: over-washing of the face means eliminating the natural oils that oil the skin, which will result in an increased dryness.

Furthermore, your day-time moisturiser should have a sun-protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 built-in. However, however much you may like sunbathing, dry sensitive skin does not really permit you to enjoy such outdoor, skin-parching pleasures.

If you have dry sensitive skin, don’t expose it to the sun in order to tan it, because you will only achieve early ageing and possibly even quite serious health problems. And last but not least, a warning must be signalled that you should change some of your cosmetic products for other ones along the lines mentioned previously.

If you decide that you should to switch to another skincare brand, it is very important that you test the product on a small piece of skin in order to test whether it provokes any negative manifestations.

Parasites on Dogs

You have to destroy heart worm, fleas and other parasites in dogs whenever they raise their ugly heads by using the relevant treatment on them. Many medications are available to defend dogs from heart worms, fleas and other parasites such as hook worms, whip worms, round worms, lice, ticks etc.

Of the heart worms, fleas and other parasites, fleas can produce a super-sensitive reaction in the infected animal. Animals infected with fleas scratch their skin very vigorously. Often the scratching is so severe that the skin becomes super-sensitive and dermatitis occurs in the affected areas of skin.

The consequences of a serious flea infestation is often that the animal can not lie down for long or sleep properly because of the continuous flea bites. So, the animal appears to have some serious skin issues. If the your dog is not properly treated for these flea bites, there could be a secondary bacterial attack in these areas and there may even be a bad smell emanating from the affected area of your dog’s skin.

You need to observe your dog closely in order prevent a serious outbreak. It is essential to prevent such an outbreak as they are extremely distressing to dogs. Similarly, the skin of the animal needs to be checked regularly for the presence of ticks and lice. In order to do this properly, you need to look at the dog’s skin by separating the dog’s hairs. The easiest way to achieve this is by slowly back-combing or ruffling the dog’s hair.

Usually, if your pet is anaemic, and he is not infested with fleas, you need to rule out hookworm. Symptoms of hookworm are anaemia, loose stools and a pot belly. The dog’s owner may recognize these symptoms themselves, however, to be honest, the dog needs to undergo a routine health check at the vet’s involving faecal and hematological examinations.

There are many products available commercially, some of which are useful for dealing with all these conditions by a single dose. Drugs like ivermectin are highly effective and are available in injection, oral and solution forms. The latter should be put directly on the dog’s skin. These drugs can induce the prevention of these conditions too.

So, the best strategy to follow is to keep a keen eye on your dog. This can most easily be done at bath time and when you are grooming him. You can use an anti-flea and anti-tick shampoo, which will keep these nuisances under control, if used as stated on the bottle. Couple this with frequent grooming with a lice comb and the use of a flea collar should keep your pet tick, lice, and flea free.

Acne Problems

Acne is one of the commonest skin problems afflicting mankind and it it can be present in all people irrespective of age, caste, colour or gender. Acne is an extremely embarrassing and troublesome problem, because it is so noticeable and unsightly. Acne can be described as red eruptions on the skin, often filled with a white puss, causing discomfort and irritation. The commonest type of acne is called acne vulgaris or puberty spots.

Acne vulgaris can be defined thus: … an inflammatory disease of the skin, caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland) . Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, spots or zits – [source: Wikipedia]. It is a heart-breaking problem that we do not appear to have complete control over. However, there are various ways to treat acne: you can go in for medication from a skin specialist or you can go in for home or natural remedies.

Home treatments are less time consuming, less expensive and have no side effects. However, they do take a bit more patience, because certain routines have to be followed rigorously in order to cure the problem for good. A natural remedy for acne is just as efficacious as medication. Here are a few natural cures to cure your acne. To start with, your daily consumption of water should be a minimum of eight to ten glasses. This helps you to detoxify your body and kill the harmful bacteria that cause acne.

Too much oily food also leads to acne, so fried and spicy food should be strictly avoided. Complete abstinence of fried and fatty food will have a marked, beneficial effect on an outbreak of acne. Furthermore, including chromium and zinc in your diet also helps to cure acne. There has to be a combination of the right nutritional balance and proper, hygenic skin care.

A mixture of nutmeg powder with unboiled milk regularly applied on the affected area also helps to eradicate acne. Cinnamon powder mixed with honey is equally effective in curing acne. Boiled Neem tree leaves applied to acne acts as a disinfectant. ['Neem': A tall, usually evergreen East Indian tree (Azadirachta indica) widely cultivated in tropical Asia for its timber, resin, bitter bark, and aromatic seed oil, which is used medicinally and as an insecticide (source = 'Free Online Dictionary')].

The afflicted area should be washed with special anti-acne soap a minimum of three or four times a day. Make-up must be religiously avoided when afflicted by acne. Make-up makes acne worse. Acne must never be squeezed as it may cause infection or / and make it worse. Squeezing your acne can also lead to permanent scars on your skin, which results in your skin looking unsightly. Avoid letting your hair touch the acne-infected area either.

Hair should be kept tied back to avoid contact with the acne. Pillow covers should be washed on a daily basis to prevent the germ spreading. The regular cleansing of your skin should be done to keep it free from germs. Apart from this, a healthy lifestyle should be followed with a proper balance of food, exercise and sleep. Remember if you take good care of yourself, ailments will have trouble afflicting you, especially such a small thing as acne!

Fleas, Ticks and Worms

Fleas and other parasites have always to be given the highest priority by dog owners. The all too common incidences of flea bite allergy in the case of dogs causes worry to many dog owners every year. This is because flea bites can cause allergic reactions in the area bitten by the fleas. In these cases, the affected skin becomes hairless due to the dog scratching itself vigorously.

Heavy flea infestations can cause severe dermatitis in dogs. If the flea bites produce an allergic reaction or even dermatitis in your dog, he/she really ought to be taken to the veterinary doctor, because mostly, the dog will be suffering extreme discomfort by now.

The vet will provide a cream to ease the itching and powder or a spray to kill the fleas. Therefore, prevention is better and medicated collars are available to treat and prevent an infestation of external parasites like ticks and fleas.

Besides fleas, other parasites like ticks and lice plus internal parasites like hookworm, round worm, whip worms etc. can affect the health of your dog. For example, if hookworms infect a dog, that dog will usually suffer from anaemia. The signs of anaemia become more evident according to the degree of infection by the hookworm.

Hookworm larvae can pass directly through the skin and cause severe problems inside the affected dog. Such dogs may show cuts on the paws and on the skin due to dermatitis. Frequently, skin rashes result in such cases and the infected animal may also pass runny stools, which are tinged red with blood.

Most dogs and all puppies get round worms, which is why dogs can sometimes be seen rubbing their bottoms along the ground. However, if round worms are present in very large numbers, affected puppies show a pot belly, which is easily noticeable by the dog’s owners themselves. A dose of piperazine salts is given orally for the cure of this problem. However, broad-spectrum anthelmintics like pyrantel pamoate, fenbendazole etc. are also given to cure this very common condition.

There are many drugs on the market to treat fleas and other parasites these days, although medications including the drug ‘ivermectin’ seem to be preferred by many dog owners to treat fleas and other parasites in dogs. This drug is available for injection or oral use but is now even available for external application too.
