Ok, one of the most common question we get is how do I upgrade the IOS on my Cisco 2500 router? I can refer you to the documentation on Cisco’s site on how to do this, but it seems as though for the new CCNA student that this just does not give you all the information you need to successfully upgrade your IOS. I completely understand this as their instructions are written for someone who is already familiar with Cisco routers and switches and who is probably already a Cisco CCNA. Now I might also suggest to you that it is not imperative that you upgrade the IOS on your Cisco router as soon as you get it. You see, the commands that reside in version 11.x are 95% the same as in 12.x.

The Cisco CCNA exam really focuses on the core commands that have been there for years. So again, there is no need for an immediate upgrade day one when you get your Cisco router from 11.x to 12.x IOS. Take your time and become comfortable with the router and the commands. Otherwise you may mess up the upgrade and sit there cursing at the router as you try to figure out how to get IOS back on the router that you deleted by mistake. But don’t worry; you will be able to recover if you deleted the IOS by mistake too. It is just a little different of a process. Now when you feel you are pretty comfortable with the IOS commands, then perform the Cisco router IOS upgrade. After all, you will need to be able to complete such as exercise to pass the Cisco CCNA exam.

Now in this article, I am going to make an assumption that you have our study CD which has some of these files on it. If you don’t have our CD, you can purchase it or search the web for stuff like the SolarWinds TFTP server. Ok, here we go!

Here are the steps to start….

1) On the CD, follow the link to install the trial version of the SolarWinds TFTP server. You can access this by inserting the CD in your computer, auto-running the CD and you should see the CiscoKits splash screen. On the splash screen you should see a link for “Handy Programs”. Click that link and then follow the link for the install of the SolarWinds TFTP Server.

2) After you install the TFTP server, you will copy the 2500 IOS file that you want to upgrade the router with to the c:tftproot folder if you followed the default install directories for the TFTP server. This file is a .bin(binary) file so you will not be able to open. Many people will tell us that there is a problem with the file as they can’t open it. You are not supposed to be able to open and launch it as it is not an .exe file.

3) Launch the TFTP server.

4) Once in the TFTP server application, go under File, click Configure and click the Start services button. Click Ok. You should see in the bottom of the TFTP server application box that it says service status is “Started” and you should see the IP address(ex. 192.168.1.100) of the TFTP server to the left of that along with the c:tftproot folder as the default folder to the left of that(again, that is where the TFTP server will look for the .bin IOS file). If you do not see all that, you have missed a step somewhere so please go back and verify your steps.

5) This step could go a few different ways. 5a will be the steps if you already have a good version of IOS on the router. 5b will be if you accidentally deleted the IOS from the router. Now in my example here I am going to assume you have some sort of switch or hub that you have the Cisco router and your PC connected into. I will also assume you are using an internal IP address scheme of 192.168.1.x. The address for the router will be 192.168.1.80 and the IP address of the TFTP server will be 192.168.1.100. If you are not using that IP schema, then you will need to modify these instructions accordingly to fit your IP schema.

5a) Boot the unit normally. You should be brought to a normal user mode. In step 7, we will get you into privileged mode.

5b) Boot the unit and if you have no IOS on the flash, it will boot using the boot image from ROM. You will know this as your prompt will look like this: Router(boot)

6) Put a transceiver on the AUI port. Hook an Ethernet patch cable to the transceiver and the other end to the hub or switch your computer is connected to.

7) The next set of commands we are doing to setup an IP address on the Cisco router. We have to have an IP address assigned to the Ethernet interface or we will not be able to communicate via IP with the TFTP server. Do the following commands: En Config t Int E0 Ip address 192.168.1.80 255.255.255.0 No shut Exit Exit Copy tftp flash
8) It will ask you the name of the remote host. Address or name of remote host []? 192.168.1.100 Put the IP address of your TFTP server.

9) Next it will as you the Source file name. Source filename []? c2500-is-l.123.24.bin It is the name of the IOS file you copied over to the c:tftproot folder.

10) Next it will as you the Destination file name. Destination filename [c2500-is-l.123.24.bin]?y Hit y for yes to use the current file name. It may ask you to confirm. Enter y for yes.

11) It will then ask you if you want to erase the current flash file system. Enter y for yes. It may ask you to confirm a second time, if it does, enter y for yes again. Erase flash: before copying? [confirm]y

12) Next is should start the flash erase as seen below and you will see the file copy process as noted by the exclamation points. Erasing device… eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeee …erased Erase of flash: complete Loading c2500-is-l.123.24.bin from 192.168.1.100 (via Ethernet0): !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

13) If you start to see a bunch of periods, then that means you have some sort of connectivity issue. Here are the things I suggest you look at: A) Is the link light on the hub or switch for both the PC connection and the Cisco router connection? B) From a command prompt on the PC, can you ping the IP address of the PC? C) From a command prompt on the PC, can you ping the IP address of the Cisco router? D) From hyperterminal on the router, can you ping the IP address of the Cisco router? E) From hyperterminal on the router, can you ping the IP address of the PC? F) Is the service still started on the TFTP server and is the IP address still 192.168.1.100? These things should start to give you an idea of where the problem may be.

In the process of developing and preparing e-learning content for migration to a learning management system, many choices must be made. There are navigational choices and multimedia options. Then there is the LMS service choice itself. Beyond those, there are aesthetic choices to be made; in other words, your courseware’s design. One element of your courseware design is your e-learning course logo.

First, a disclaimer: compared to many other e-learning course choices, a logo is really quite unimportant. Your content itself needs to be unique, strong and effective in order to survive and thrive. However, it’s also true that no one says “Don’t judge a book by its cover” for nothing. The reality is we all do it; we make quick, visually-based judgments all the time. We do it when we decide about everything from soap to dinner to cars, to even more important choices involving education and romantic partners. Considering this, it must also be acknowledged that a smart and memorable logo can distinguish your courseware from others. It can pique the interest of potential users, and stick with them in the future.

So what types of logos work the best? Keep in mind this rule: your logo acts as the visual illustration that represents your e-learning course. Essentially, it will embody your learning content. But it will also, after some time, facilitate viewer recognition of (and trust in) your product.

Logos can come in all kinds of forms, including a simple name or logotype, or a sign, icon or emblem. The latter are also known as ideograms. Just how do you go about designing an interesting and unique courseware logo? Brainstorm relentlessly. Don’t be afraid to use up lots of paper writing out your ideas by hand. Doing it the old-fashioned way is key; large design firms use this strategy, sketching out everything by hand before even thinking of using a computer. Sketching is just the most effective and simplest way to quickly create and imagine a logo.

Now that you have a simple but unique logo in front of you, it’s time to test it out. Be adventurous. Experiment with your design, adding new colors, mixing up shades and tones, and adding and subtracting images. Test your logo in various situations, inserting text in different positions to find out where it looks best. Test different font sizes and styles.

Microsoft Office Excel 2007 contains no menus or toolbars. However, it does include a feature called the Office Button which bears a remarkable similarity to a menu as well as a Quick Access Toolbar which functions a lot like the toolbars found in previous releases of Microsoft Office. In this article, we’ll take a look at these two features and see how they work.

Excel’s Office Button

The Office Button is found in the top left of the Excel screen. When you click it, a menu appears which resembles menus found in most software programs and also in previous versions of Excel. The Office Button menu allows you to create, open, save and print documents. It also contains options for preparing documents for distribution, closing the currently active document and exiting Excel altogether.

The Office Button also contains a list of the recently opened files. Next to the name of each file is a pin icon. This icon is used to pin the associated document. Pinning a document means that it won’t disappear from the list of recently opened files. By contrast, unpinned documents will eventually disappear from the list as files are created and opened.

It is also here that you will find “Excel Options”. (This is equivalent to Tools-Options found in previous versions of Excel.) Excel Options are displayed as a column of categorised tabs on the left of the dialog. Just click on a tab to reveal options in that category. The Excel Options customise the way in which Excel works. Let’s look at a few examples…

Excel’s Developer Tab (which contains commands for working with macros) is not visible when Excel is first installed. To make Excel display it, choose “Excel Options” from the Office Button and, in the “Popular” category, switch on the option “Show Developer Tab in the Ribbon”. A second example… By default, each new document you create has three sheets. If you find this too many or too few, you can change the number of sheets which each new work will contain. Choose “Excel Options” from the Office Button and, in the “Popular” category, under the section headed “When Creating New Workbooks Include this Many Sheets”, simply enter your preferred number of sheets for each new workbook you create.

The Excel Quick Access Toolbar

The Excel Quick Access Toolbar is usually displayed in the top left of the screen, next to the Office Button. It functions in a similar way to the toolbars found in old versions of Microsoft Excel.

By default, the Quick Access Toolbar contains only three commands: saving the current workbook, undoing commands and redoing commands.

To the right of the three default commands is a menu which enables you to personalise the Quick Access Toolbar and determine which buttons are displayed and which commands remain hidden.

Each of the commands in the Quick Access Toolbar menu is a switch: if a command is active, when you select it, it will be removed: if a command is hidden, choosing it will make it visible.

Another method of customising the Quick Access Toolbar is to add your favourite options from the Excel Ribbon. Just right click on an option in any of the Tabs of the Ribbon. In the context menu which pops up, simply choose “Add To Quick Access Toolbar”.

If you find that you are using the Quick Access Toolbar a lot, you may find it convenient to move it below the Ribbon. Simply choose “Show Below The Ribbon” from the Quick Access Toolbar drop-down menu. You can also make the Quick Access Toolbar more accessible by minimising the ribbon. To do this, double-click on the name of any ribbon Tab or choose “Minimise the Ribbon” from the Quick Access Toolbar menu.

XML Schema Basics

XML schema definition languages are derived from the recommendations of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). They use XML 1.0 syntax and their role is to explicit describe the structure of XML documents and constrain the data which they may contain. They offer a distinct improvement on the more limited schema features offered by the Document Type Definition (DTD) recommendation which formed part of the original XML specification released in 1998. The most widely used schema language is the one defined by the W3C in 2001: W3C XML Schema. However, there are alternatives, such as RELAX NG and Schematron.

Schema documents are the more sophisticated successors to DTDs and overcome some key limitations associated with them. Firstly, DTDs do not support data types. Secondly, DTDs do not support namespaces. Thirdly, DTDs do not allow developers to accurately define the number of permitted occurrences of elements within their parent element.

An XML schema describes the structure of an XML instance document by defining what each element must or may contain. An element is limited by its type. For example, an element of complex type can contain child elements and attributes, whereas a simple-type element can only contain text. The diagram below gives a first look at the types of XML Schema elements.

Schema documents have three main purposes. Firstly, they can be used to validate XML documents. Secondly, they can be used as a dictionary or grammar for the creation of a given class of XML document. And, thirdly, they can be used to provide documentation for XML documents.

Each XML schema is itself an XML document and contains definitions of all elements and attributes permitted in a given class of XML documents. The schema also specifies the structure or hierarchy to which elements must adhere and the type of content each particular element may contain. Elements may be of the simple or complex type. Complex type elements may contain child elements as well as attributes. Simple type element may only contain data. XML documents using a particular schema are referred to as instances of the schema. An XML instance that correctly adheres to its associated schema is said to be valid.

Validation is usually the main purpose of schema documents. Validation offers many benefits. It ensures the consistency of data within a document. It ensures that data has the right structure and internal hierarchy. It ensures that data within the document structure is of the correct type. It allows us to receive data from multiple sources.

Almost all XML documents are generated by programs and scripts written to extract information held in databases and transform it into XML. However, it is also possible for human beings to create XML documents. Schemas can be used during this process to assist in the document creation process. XML schemas also provide a mechanism for documenting XML documents and form an important part of the specification of XML vocabularies.

Why don’t you simply watch and be taught by tutors one-on-one from pre-filmed lessons, studying them when it suits you – not somebody else. Do them at home on your PC or why not in the garden on a laptop. If you’ve got questions, then logon to the 24×7 support facility (that we hope you’ll insist on with any technical courses.) No matter how often you have to re-cover a topic, filmed instructors will never get annoyed or frustrated! And remember, with this method, there’s no need to take notes. Everything’s laid out there for immediate use. Could it be simpler: No wasted time or money, travelling is avoided; and of course you get a much more stress-free learning environment.

Make sure that all your qualifications are what employers want – don’t even consider studies which end up with a useless in-house certificate or plaque. If your certification doesn’t come from a company like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe, then you’ll probably find it will be commercially useless – because no-one will recognise it.

Considering how a program is ‘delivered’ to you isn’t always given the appropriate level of importance. How is the courseware broken down? And in what order and how fast does each element come? A release of your materials stage by stage, according to your own speed is how things will normally arrive. Of course, this sounds sensible, but you might like to consider this: It’s not unusual for trainees to realise that their providers ‘standard’ path of training doesn’t suit. It’s often the case that a slightly different order suits them better. And what if you don’t get to the end at the pace they expect?

Put simply, the best solution is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but get everything up-front. Everything is then in your possession in case you don’t finish quite as quick as they’d want.
